It is not always easy to take care of yourself. All too often, women let their own health take second priority to the hectic demands of family, work and other obligations.

That’s why each year National Women’s Health Week is a time we remind women to prioritize their health and build positive health habits for life.

Obtaining screening tests for the leading health issues among women such as breast cancer, heart disease and osteoporosis is one important step you can take. Did you know:

• Breast cancer deaths are reduced by approximately 30%-50% among women who receive regular mammograms
• 90% of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease, such as family history, diabetes, excess weight or smoking and may not have symptoms
• Osteoporosis can be present for years without any noticeable symptoms and many women do not know they have it until they break a bone

Should you consider a mammogram, heart screening or DXA scan?

• The American College of Radiology and the Society of Breast Imaging recommend women start getting annual mammograms at age 40 and continue as long as they are in good health
• Indicators such as high cholesterol, blood pressure and blood glucose may lead your doctor to recommend a CT Calcium Score or Coronary CTA
• It is recommended that women 65 years old or older and women who are 50 to 64 and have certain risk factors such as a parent who has broken a hip get screened for osteoporosis with a DXA scan
