Seven years ago, Kish Burries made a choice that would change her life: She decided to get fit and healthy. “After watching thousands of workout videos and seeing people naturally transform their bodies over time through fitness and nutrition, I thought to myself ‘If they did it, I certainly can too.’”

What happened next was unexpected, though. Burries didn’t just get fit—she fell in love with healthy living.

As Burries began to see results, she wanted to help others achieve their health and fitness goals too. “I took a leap of faith to become a certified personal trainer,” she says. Empowering clients to make positive changes and seeing their transformations is what Burries loves most about her job. “I get to help others accomplish goals they didn’t think were possible. The greatest reward is seeing others thrive,” she says.

Today, Burries is a busy fitness coach who offers custom meal and workout plans through her business Planted by Kish. But running a company can make work-life balance that much more elusive, which is why she considers quality time with herself a non-negotiable.

“Self-care is having my priorities in place and being intentional about cultivating each one, every day,” says Burries. “It’s prioritizing what’s important: exercising regularly, going on dates with my husband, eating healthy foods, getting quality sleep, and making time for God and prayer.”

Below, Burries shares five essentials when it comes to refueling her mind and body.

Hand weights

It is easy to feel overwhelmed with all the home gym equipment options, but Burries says hand weights are a no-brainer. “They’re super-convenient on those days you can’t make it to the gym, but you still want to get an effective and efficient workout in,” she says.

The fitness coach likes to use weights while doing lunges, squats, and push-ups. “These movements are effective exercises that work all the major muscles of the body and can be performed almost anywhere,” she says.

Burries takes probiotics to balance gut bacteria. “Since being consistent with my probiotic use, I have noticed a boost in my immune system as well as a positive change in my digestion,” she says. Burries opts for Walgreens 24/7 Probiotic. “I like that it doesn’t require you to take too many capsules at once—one capsule daily is sufficient. I take these with a glass of water along with my breakfast for the day,” she says.

One of Burries’ go-to supplements is vitamin C, particularly Walgreens Wal-Born Vitamin C gummies. “I like taking vitamin C in gummy form because of the convenience: I don’t need water to take them, and they are easy to travel with,” she says. “Taking Vitamin C allows me to absorb iron better. Because Vitamin C helps boost collagen production, I think my skin has a healthier glow,” she says.

“It can be challenging to stay consistent with supplements. I always suggest starting slow and finding a routine that works best with your schedule,” Burries says.

myWalgreens Credit Card

Opening a credit card with cash rewards at a store you frequent can equal some serious savings to spend on self-care. For all of her health and wellness purchases, Burries uses her myWalgreens Mastercard® because it allows her to earn Walgreens Cash rewards for everyday purchases, including self-care products, when she shops at Walgreens and other retailers. She earns 10 percent Walgreens Cash rewards on Walgreens-branded products* (exclusions apply) and 5 percent Walgreens Cash rewards for almost everything else storewide—even at the pharmacy* (exclusions apply).

If approved for the myWalgreens Mastercard®, you can also earn Walgreens Cash rewards when you use your card outside of Walgreens—3 percent Walgreens Cash rewards on grocery and health and wellness purchases* (gym memberships and home gym items when purchased at sporting good stores, etc.) and 1 percent everywhere Mastercard is accepted* (fitness apps, blenders, juicers, and more).

"What I like best is the 3 percent Walgreens Cash rewards on grocery and health and wellness purchases outside of Walgreens," says Burries. "I love to make sure I'm stocked up on all these things."

Post-workout shakes

When Burries is done working out, she loves to refuel with a protein shake she blends collagen into. When consumed after working out, protein can help rebuild muscle as well as repair connective tissue damage.

Collagen plays an important role in the health of connective tissue, skin, and bones. As we age, collagen levels can drop by about 1 percent each year, possibly contributing to stiff joints, weaker cartilage, and decreased muscle mass. To combat that loss, Burries incorporates a scoop of collagen peptide powder into protein shakes.

Melatonin before bed

Every night at 10 p.m., Burries switches gears, mutes all notifications on her phone, and gets ready for bed. At this time, “I can turn my attention inward by either reading a book or spending time with my husband. This helps me to be more productive and get prepared for the day ahead,” she says.

When she knows she may need a little extra help dozing off, she takes an Olly Sleep gummy one hour before bedtime. It contains melatonin, which can help people with sleep disorders fall asleep faster, as well as L-theanine, an amino acid that may help manage stress and anxiety levels.

“I have noticed that my mood also seems much calmer before the sleepiness kicks in,” Burries says. “I can actually feel myself falling into a deep state of mental rest before an actual physical rest.”
