in memoriam

Remembering Melody Whitaker Hall Melody Whitaker Hall was a wife, mother, and friend. We both attended and graduated from Bennett College in Greensboro. Bennett College is an historically Black college for women and it was there that I first met Melody. She was friendly and full of laughter and possessed a smile that could light up the room! During her time at Bennett she was also a member of the North Carolina A&T State University Marching Band and its drumline—affectionately named “Cold Steel.” Melody was a human resources manager at Rooms To Go in Charlotte when she was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in 2006. She endured numerous rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and a mastectomy. After going into remission, she and her husband, Howard,

welcomed their daughter Lauren into their lives. In 2011, Melody received the news that the cancer had returned and advanced to Stage 4 metastatic cancer. To know Melody was to know that she was a fighter! She fought valiantly, enduring years of treatments and clinical trials so that she could have a little more time with her husband, daughter, and friends. Although we lost Melody on October 20, 2017, she is now cancer free and pain free and resides in heaven with her new glorified body. Melody always had a word of encouragement ready on her lips and was sure to ask you how you were doing, despite what she had been going through. My hope is that her daughter, now 11, and husband find a bit of comfort in knowing that Melody’s legacy still lives on in the lives of so many in this area and across the country.

Until we meet again Melody, my sweet friend …
