A New Edition of Art:LIVE features Bjarke Ingels, Idris Khan and Anicka Yi

Art:LIVE is a series of original video content that brings to the viewer accessible expert insights into recent developments in contemporary art and culture, produced in partnership with Frieze's Global Lead Partner Deutsche Bank. 

This edition of Art:LIVE takes the theme of ‘A New World’. As Frieze London and Frieze Masters return as in-person events, marking a further emergence from the COVID-19 pandemic, what values and priorities will shape the new cultural landscape? And, with the UN Climate Change Conference taking place just few weeks after the fairs, how should ecology factor inform new practices and behaviours?

Highlights of this edition of Art:LIVE include: star architect Bjarke Ingels sharing his vision for a more sustainable urban landscape; a first look at Anicka Yi’s highly anticipated new Hyundai Commission  at Tate Modern with the artist and Achim Borchardt-Hume, Tate Modern’s Director of Exhibitions and Programmes; and expert insights into key moments at the 2021 editions of Frieze London and Frieze Masters, including a round-up of creative engagements with ecology and the natural world, and an intimate tour of the Deutsche Bank Lounge by artist Idris Khan.

Anicka Yi

Anicka Yi was born in Seoul in 1971 and now lives and works in New York City. She has been the subject of solo exhibitions at museums including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, Kunsthalle Basel, and the Fridericianum in Kassel. Her work featured in the Venice Biennale in 2019, the Whitney Biennial in 2017 and the Gwangju Biennale in 2016, as well as in many group exhibitions around the world. She won the Hugo Boss Prize in 2016 and has held residencies and fellowships at the Berggruen Institute in Los Angeles, the Headlands Center for the Arts, and the Center for Art Science and Technology at MIT.

Bjarke Ingels founded BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group in 2005 after co-founding PLOT Architects in 2001. Prior to this, Bjarke worked at the Office of Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Through a series of award-winning design projects, and through co-founding such startups as ‘design living’ company, Nabr, Bjarke has developed a reputation for designing buildings that are as programmatically and technically innovative as they are cost and resource conscious. In 2021, Bjarke was selected as an ambassador of the EU’s New European Bauhaus. In the same year, he co-founded design living company, Nabr. Bjarke has received numerous awards and honors, including the Danish Crown Prince’s Culture Prize in 2011, the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2004, and the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Award for Excellence in 2009. In 2011, the Wall Street Journal awarded Bjarke the Architectural Innovator of the Year Award. In 2016, Time Magazine named Bjarke one of the 100 most influential people in the world today. Alongside his architectural practice, Bjarke has taught at Harvard University, Yale University, Columbia University, and Rice University and is an honorary professor at the Royal Academy of Arts, School of Architecture in Copenhagen. He is a frequent public speaker and has spoken in venues such as TED, WIRED, AMCHAM, 10 Downing Street, and the World Economic Forum.

London-based artist Idris Khan has received international acclaim for his minimal, yet emotionally charged photographs, videos and sculptures and is without question one of the most exciting British artists of his generation. Drawing on diverse cultural sources including literature, history, art, music and religion, Khan has developed a unique narrative involving densely layered imagery that inhabits the space between abstraction and figuration and speaks to the themes of history, cumulative experience, and the metaphysical collapse of time into single moments.

Idris Khan has had solo exhibitions at international venues including The New Art Gallery Walsall, Walsall, England; Whitworth Gallery, University of Manchester, England; the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto, Canada; K20, Dusseldorf, Germany; and Gothenburg Konsthall, Sweden. He has also been featured in numerous group exhibitions at venues including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Tate Britain, London, England; Hayward Gallery, London, England; The Saatchi Gallery, London, England; Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton, Paris, France; Baibakov Art Projects, Moscow, Russia; the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, England; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Helsinki Kunsthalle, Finland. In 2017 Idris Khan was appointed an OBE for services to Art in the Queen’s Birthday 2017 Honors List.
