Emerging filmmaker Sthabile Mkhize (34) is raising the South African flag high.
The eThekwini-born star is looking for a French producer for her film, God’s Work.
The two-hour film is about homeless people known as amaphara, who live in the streets of Durban.
“Most of these people are seen as troublesome and many of them are not seen at all. However, within this community, there is also a group of friends who, like all human beings, have dreams, fears, desires and hopes,” she said.
“This film was written in 2020 but because of the hard lockdown, we had to suspend everything.”

Next month, Sthabile will go to the Cannes Film Festival in France to showcase the film with the hope of getting a co-producer.
“I’m one of the two Durban filmmakers who will be participating in the festival. For me this is a privilege and I don’t take it lightly. My biggest hope is to get funds but one of the requirements is to get a French producer,” she said.
The film will be out in 2024.
“For now, the film needs to be funded, marketed and we still need to cast for it. We are also working closely with the homeless people. Our aim is to ensure their stories are as authentic as possible,” she said.
Sthabile is not new to the film industry. Several of her documentaries and films have been commissioned by e.tv. Another film, Dreams of Gomorrah, is on Showmax.
