FROM THE her

I REALIZE THIS ISN’T GROUNDBREAKING NEWS, but men and women are di erent. Men use single sections of their brain to accomplish tasks, while, when women problem solve, they access many sections of their brains at once. My husband and I experienced this lack of brain synchronicity rsthand when we were preparing for a three-day trip recently. While packing, he hastily threw into a du el bag two pair of pants, three shirts, three pair of underwear, and a toothbrush. I, however, thought about the what ifs and the could happens. at’s why my extralarge suitcase contained ip ops and rain boots, a parka and a bathing suit, plus a co ee maker and a 64-oz. bottle of soda. And some clothes, of course. I needed another bag entirely for my toiletries. Apparently, my husband and I are not alone though because there are tons of statistics showing that men and women approach travel very di erently.

ere are also statistics proving that travel can bring out the worst in people. I can attest to that, too, as I know a story about an awful traveler who was at her worst even while vacationing on the beautiful island of Maui. is woman was jet lagged to the point she became something of a zombie—a really bad-tempered zombie. She was so undeniably ornery that when her travel companion nudged her awake when the whale-watching tour they were on pulled beside a mama whale and her calf, she jumped up and screamed “It’s just a freakin’ whale for gosh sakes, leave me alone!” then stomped o to the other side of the boat to go back to sleep. (In her defense, she hadn’t slept in four days.)

Ok, ne…that story is about me. But surely it’s not just me whose worst self rears its ugly head occasionally during travel? After all, unfortunate things have a way of happening: ights

get delayed, hotels overbook, luggage gets lost, or turbulence scares the beejeebies out of you because you’re a nervous yer and you didn’t have time for a pre-boarding margarita to numb your fears (umm…yea…that was me again).

It's the worst parts of travel, however, that proved to me my husband was Mr. Right when we rst vacationed together while dating. ough I’m fairly certain I heard an expletive or two as he lifted my suitcase into the car, when things really went awry, he reacted with a little chuckle and another margarita, embracing my grumpy, readyto-argue-about-everything vacationing self with nothing but grace and humor.

I love and adore that men are di erent from women; and in particular, I love and adore my delightfully-di erent-from-me husband. He may protest when I pack my suitcase, but he is wonderful in so many ways, and not just when he puts the seat down or lets me hold the remote control. And to be sure, since he loves me as a travel companion when my worst is not only on display, but front and center, certainly he deserves me at my best. ank you Paul Donahue for just being you.

Here’s to all of our Lake Norman men—we love you just as you are too, singlesection thinking brains and all! w

ALMOST ALL HUMAN BEHAVIOR can be attributed to our evolution and survival as cavepeople. Women stayed in the cave, took care of the babies, and made a “home” … men went out to hunt game—they provided and protected. When you start looking at how the brain and the male system had to evolve, survive, and thrive through the centuries, it is easy to see why their behaviors might be difficult for women to fully comprehend. It helps to equate that scenario when understanding your guy.

Growing older but not up.

Men ARE expressive and emotive. Contrary to popular belief, men do like to express themselves and share their feelings; they just need to feel comfortable and at ease when they do. Once he knows he can be himself with you and he won’t be judged, he will open up. And be careful not to offer solutions (unless asked) … he, like all of us, just wants to be truly heard.

They are born to problem-solve. This is why they resist asking for directions, help, and prefer not to multi-task … one thing at a time! They like to focus on a specific chore/ problem and fix it. This is why they tend to like to work with their hands and repair things around the house. But don’t give them a to-do list; that actually negates and diminishes their problem-solving mindset.

Men sometimes mask their feelings with anger. Anger has been an emotion that society “allows” men to have. This one is easy to trace back to caveman days—fight or flight! Some may not be aware they even do this, but many have learned it growing up. Behaviors are hard to unlearn but the best thing to do here, again, is to listen without judgment or criticism.

A competitive nature is not all bad. Men have an innate desire to be better than and achieve more. Most are competitive but this can be a good thing—making your partner more determined and successful in life and business. If he’s competitive with you or the kids, just understand it’s part of his manliness and embrace the quality. He wants to be brave and strong for YOU!

Most men admit (proudly and enthusiastically) that they are just big kids. While this can be endearing on many levels, it can cause stress for the more cautious female. They may forget important dates or neglect to do something you asked of them. They love friends, games, and beer so let them have their fun. Men avoid stress and escape life’s pressures by enjoying themselves through games and toys so don’t be too harsh. Positive reinforcement and knowing when to engage with them is best practice. w

Improve Your Family’s Mental Health …

Naturay!

FEW PEOPLE TALK about the incredible toll that mental health issues—which brain imaging studies show are actually “brain health” issues—take on the entire family. Bipolar disorder, ADD/ ADHD, depression, schizophrenia, and other conditions are all brain disorders. And it only takes one individual with a troubled brain for there to be family dysfunction.

First, it’s important to discuss brain lobes and how they impact our lives. ere is the prefrontal cortex which is the command center, and it is involved in planning, impulse/emotional control, and followthrough. Another important area is the temporal lobes, which are found on both sides of the brain over the ears. ey play a role in our mood and memory, and abnormal activity here is associated with temper problems and forgetfulness.

In one family seeking care, the father had low activity in the prefrontal cortex and the temporal lobes. He was disorganized, impulsive, inattentive, distractible, and forgetful. Not only did he lack follow-through with promises to his family, but these behaviors carried over into his business. Subsequently, he struggled at work and was moody at home. Unfortunately, when he trialed ADD/ADHD medications, he didn’t have a positive response. e meds made him moodier and more irritable.

Similarly, his wife had overactivity in the anterior cingulate gyrus. is area is known as the brain’s gear shifter; it’s what allows us to go from one thought to another. When there is too much activity in this region, people tend to get stuck on thoughts and behaviors, and they are more likely to have obsessive-compulsive disorder. eir son had a combination of brain issues that were consistent with ADD/ADHD and oppositional de ant disorder (ODD), a behavioral problem in which children are uncooperative, argumentative, and de ant.

In order to get this family on the right track and quite literally retrain their brains, we started them on these brainhealing strategies:

Dietary Overhaul

Most diets are filled with pro-inflammatory, allergenic foods laced with artificial chemicals. The diet is hard on the brain and can increase anxiousness, depressed moods, inattention, and memory. Choose whole foods, limit sugars, and drink ample water— while there is no set formula, the 8x8 rule (eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day) is a good goal and an easy reminder.

Exercise Overhaul

Exercise is good for our body, mind, and soul. It can be low impact but ideally you should engage in a minimum of 30 minutes, four days a week. Regular exercise provides brain cell growth and blood flow to the lobes that need it.

Sleep Overhaul

Dr. Ti any Brown-Bush is trained as an Integrative Mental Health erapist, Traditional Naturopathic Doctor, and Brain Health Practitioner. e parents’ brain functions did not allow them to have the much-needed exibility to roll with the natural ups and downs of life. ese two brains found themselves in family therapy, unable to heal because they were getting blocked. w

Work with your brain’s innate circadian rhythm. You can do this by prioritizing bedtimes and waking up at roughly the same time daily. This allows the brain to successfully detox itself overnight.

Sometimes we poke fun … sometimes we roll our eyes, but the bottomline is we love our guys!

Many thanks to Overflow in Mooresville for hosting & allowing us to photograph the 2023 LKN Men at their beautiful location! Cheers!

HAINES WHITE DR. Steven Brad DR.

What — or who — guides you?

DR. WHITE: My wife, Debi, and our five children: Matthew, Connor, Libby, Joseph, and Anna. They are such an inspiration to me. We get out to ski in the winter and spend time outside whenever we can. We also love our spiritual community at St. Mark Catholic Church. A connection to Christ is very important to us.

DR. HAINES: I have a blast with my wife, Tiffany, and our three awesome kids— Kate, Riley, and Anderson. Living in Lake Norman has allowed us to enjoy the seasons so much and being together — in whatever weather comes our way — is just the best thing in the world. I’m appreciative of our church, Life Fellowship, too. We’ve made so many great friends there.

Where do you seek solace during challenging times?

DR. WHITE : For me, on a bad day, my faith in God totally keeps me going. It helps to know that I am never alone, and I truly believe that things will work out because God is in control.

DR. HAINES: If I’m having a challenging day, the belief that God is always working for the good of those who love Him keeps me going. I know that there is always a bigger picture and purpose to what I’m going through and that God’s plan for my life is all that matters.

What makes you do your best work?

DR. WHITE: I’m a big believer in hard work and honesty. If you do the right thing and care for your patients, then you will be happy and successful.

DR. HAINES: I grew up down the street from my dentist and worked in his practice which allowed me to see the life-changing benefits of dentistry for those who desperately needed help. I’m blessed to be a part of that world today and to have it as my career.

What are you most proud of?

DR. WHITE: No question about it, our devoted team. They go above and beyond every day to take care of our patients—from scheduling their care to providing guidance and comfort along the way … and every detail in between! I’m in awe of their professionalism and incredible can-do spirit.

DR. HAINES: The staff at White & Haines Advanced Dentistry is incredible. Our office is a well-run machine because of their commitment and fantastic attitudes. They make our jobs a ton easier, and believe me, I’m indebted to them for that! w

How It All Began

I am a country boy that grew up on a small farm near Marissa in southern Illinois. We raised grain and livestock. My father always seemed to be able to find jobs to keep my mom, four sisters, and myself busy. We all had chores to do … feeding and caring for livestock was a year-round responsibility. Summertime was especially busy for us with all the farming that needed to get done. I’ve always had a really strong work ethic, and I’ve carried that with me since I was a kid. At 78, I am still going strong!

Finding Love In His Own Sweet Time

I did not marry until I was 52 years old, so I kissed a lot of frog-ettes before I met my princess, Kelly. She is from Vancouver, British Columbia, but we met at Bay Meadows racetrack in California where she trained thoroughbred racehorses. I’m thrilled to say we just celebrated our 26th wedding anniversary! Our life has been filled with animals—mostly ex-racehorses that we acquired from the racetrack to repurpose for another career. We love these creatures and couldn’t imagine our lives without them.

On Exploring the Animal Kingdom

I absolutely love traveling. My favorite vacation was a photographic trip to Africa and seeing the amazing animals and the wonderful people who live there. Believe me when I say there is nothing more hairraising than seeing a trumpeting, charging elephant. I will never, ever forget seeing those majestic animals up close.

Follow Your Passion, and the Rest Will Follow

HUNTER DR. Roger

The opportunity presented itself to purchase three hospital-grade hyperbaric chambers in Lake Norman area, so I didn't hesitate for a moment. The initial goal was to take them to California, but when I arrived in Mooresville, I saw a vibrant and growing community—one I was confident would benefit from and support a hyperbaric facility. I am so proud to bring this type of treatment to people of all walks of life. We see everyone from young athletes that just received a concussion to stroke victims to those suffering from long COVID. I firmly believe that hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the best kept secret in medicine. I opened Nirvana four years ago, and we love living and working in the Lake Norman area. It is a great community with a lot of diversity. w

NASH DR.

DR. Rs WURMLINGER Tyler

What inspired you to pursue dentistry?

DR. WURMLINGER: I knew I wanted to be a cosmetic dentist from a young age. I had a very traumatic accident in middle school that really affected my confidence. My dentist at the time inspired me to pursue a career in dentistry. From that moment, I knew I wanted to help people who are insecure about the appearance of their teeth.

DR. NASH: Cosmetic dentistry has been my passion for as long as I can remember. Nothing makes me happier than seeing my patients’ beautiful smiles. I think to myself, “Hey, I helped make that happen!” It’s a great feeling, and I’m honored to do what I do. I wouldn’t change a thing.

Talk about the loves of your life — human and otherwise!

DR. WURMLINGER: My wife, Isabel, is my greatest love. I wouldn’t be the man I am without her, that’s for sure. Our fur-babies are Bella and Vlad. They are sweet, silly pups and I can’t imagine life without them. They bring me and my wife such tremendous joy.

DR. NASH: My wife, Debra, is my absolute rock. We have worked together since 1994. She inspires me to be a better person. She makes me laugh, and she makes me more adventurous, and we have a ball loving on our rescue basset hound, Lola.

How do you savor your free time? How do you unwind?

DR. WURMLINGER: My favorite pastime is working out. I love it! Whether it’s running or lifting weights, I enjoy staying active. I also travel as much as my busy schedule allows … my favorite place I have visited is Santorini, Greece. The scenery and atmosphere are unbelievable. I hope to return one day!

DR. NASH: Believe it or not I enjoy listening to various podcasts on dentistry. I like hearing stories from others in my profession and comparing notes. It keeps me updated on the dental industry and abreast of current trends, treatments, and other advances.

Talk to us about motivation. How do you stay energized and engaged?

Both Dr. Tyler Wurmlinger and Dr. Ross Nash are dentists at Cosmetic Dentistry of the Carolinas located at 403 Gilead Road, #E, in Huntersville. Dr. Wurmlinger purchased the practice from Dr. Nash in 2021. Dr. Nash remains a vital part of the Cosmetic Dentistry of the Carolinas’ team. They can be reached at 704.895.7660 or via www.CosmeticDentistofCharlotte.com.

DR. WURMLINGER: On a bad day, the thing that keeps me going are the people who depend on me. Whether that is my patients or my family, I know I have a purpose outside of myself.  I know that my hard day doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. I am lucky to be doing what I love every day, and I remind myself of that often.

DR. NASH: Ditto what Dr. Wurmlinger said! My patients and my family are my guiding light. I continue to make professional strides because of them. When I get up in the morning, I ask myself, “How can I make today great?” Simple … I just think of my family, my team, my staff, and those I have the honor of helping each and every day. w

Born and Raised

I was born and raised in northeastern North Carolina. After graduating from Currituck County High School in 1982, I enrolled at Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina. I graduated from Campbell in 1986 with honors and then enrolled at The Campbell School of Law and graduated in 1989. I have lived and practiced exclusively in North Carolina.

Faith, Family, and Philanthropy

I have been married for over 30 years and we have three grown children. My wife teaches at one of the local schools and we spend our free time with family and friends. Belonging to Saint Mark’s Lutheran for many years now, we cherish our church family and love paying it forward and giving back. I am a member of the Race City Civitans here in Mooresville which is a non-profit service organization that raises funds for special needs projects and groups in our community.

We Rise By Lifting Others

The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others. I treat everyone fairly. If I tell you something, you can trust that is the way it is. This personal, one-onone interaction is what I feel folks deserve when investing in legal services and entrusting their cases to a lawyer. I will always be straightforward with our clients about their cases; at the same time, we will do everything possible to get them the result they seek.

We are an active family and enjoy all things outdoors … we spend as much time on the lake as we can!

DR. FORAN: Like Dr. Coleman, I married my college love too, Megan, and we have two children—Erin and Liam. As a family, we enjoy hanging out on the lake or relaxing at any beach location, but our favorite is Isle of Palms outside of Charleston. I also love participating in triathlons … the training helps me to unwind, relax, and be a better dad/husband—it’s a great time to think.

If the Tooth Fits

DR. COLEMAN: After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, I earned my doctorate in dental science from the University of Buffalo. I then completed my residency at Virginia Commonwealth University and moved to the Lake Norman area to join my uncle, Dr. Patrick Coleman, at his Cornelius practice.

DR. FORAN: I attended Loyola College for my bachelor’s degree in biology, Temple University School of Dentistry, and Walter Reed Army Medical Center for my residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery. It was in attending a group in need of care— wounded soldiers—at Walter Reed when I decided to become an oral surgeon. I was able to see firsthand the role they had in the soldiers’ recovery, and I knew that I wanted to be a part of it.

Gratitude and Giving Back

DR. COLEMAN: Understanding the importance of giving back, I participate in numerous community events every year. I am proud and honored to serve the people of Lake Norman and to be a contributing member of this amazing area we call home … it fills my heart.

DR. FORAN: Gratitude is everything! We all have bad days, but they have taught me to ignore the minutia— to take a step back and realize that I have a happy and healthy family, a supportive work team, and successful career. I am very fortunate and extremely grateful.

On Other Things

DR. COLEMAN: It’s important to have the right priorities in life and I feel like I’ve cultivated a pretty good balance. I work hard and play hard with my family … there are so many opportunities to do active things around this area; we are always having an adventure. I think this is the secret to life.

DR. FORAN: A perfect day for me is to wake up at the beach, go for a long run or bike ride, spend the day with my family, grill dinner in the evening, and kick back with a nice cold beer. w

Sweet Carolina

Born and raised in Charlotte, I attended St. Mark’s for elementary and middle school, Charlotte Catholic High School, and Elon University. My family moved to Huntersville when I was young, so this will always be home to me, even though I now live in Uptown Charlotte. I guess you could say I have deep roots in the Carolinas.

Chilling Out, One Vacay at a Time

I love to travel and explore new places. With a recent trip to the West Coast, I was able to see a good chunk of California. I have a blast checking out exotic locations such as the Virgin Islands and Turks and Caicos. You’ll also find me escaping to the mountains whenever I can. There is something about the openness that really centers me.

Fitting In Fitness

I played soccer growing up and still like to maintain an active lifestyle. I manage to get some kind of exercise in every day—whether hiking, golfing, yoga, or just going to the gym to unwind. I’ve found that working out and eating healthy keeps me fueled and focused no matter what kind of a day I’m having.

Finding Strength In Scripture

I am guided by Joshua 1:9 which reads, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” I believe anything is possible with God by your side. Failing is part of living and being human, and the only way to lose in life is by giving up. I also remind myself that I would fail 1000 times over if there was any chance at being successful. It’s so important to me to just keep moving forward.

Those Who Lift Me Up

I am incredibly lucky to have a great group of friends whom I’ve bonded with over the years. Those are lasting relationships, and they mean a lot to me. They help me to remember the important things in life. When my godmother/ aunt passed away when I was in high school, I was devastated. But in that time, I became stronger emotionally and mentally. It made me realize life can be short, and every day is a gift. w

A Little Background

I was born in Minot, North Dakota, and graduated from Minot State University in 1991 with a premed degree. After completing my doctoral degree at Northwestern College of Chiropractic in 1999, I ran a successful practice for 16 years in Minnesota. In 2015, I joined a select few within the chiropractic profession who have earned a prestigious Diplomate in Chiropractic Philosophy. I am also a long-standing member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association and hold an advanced Certification in Pediatric and Prenatal Care, including the much sought-after Webster technique.

As Fate Would Have It

Me and my wife, Michelle, ran a successful familyfocused practice in the San Francisco Bay area for six years. God guided us to Mooresville during the COVID pandemic, and we never looked back. We found Liberty Prep for schooling, Freedom House for our church, and I had the opportunity to join Advanced Spinal Fitness. My passion and goal is to help athletes achieve optimal performance and to help families thrive.

Searching for a Better Way

When I was young, I saw how my grandparents lived with daily medications and wanted to find a way to help the body function better. I wanted to understand how it was designed, how it worked, and how people could heal so they did not need drugs or chemicals to chase symptoms. Watching their health deteriorate inspired my mission in life which is to help keep toxins, chemicals, and drugs out of the bodies of people, especially children.

Family, Fitness, and Faith

My wife, kids (we have four), and I are thrilled to now call the Lake Norman area home. We so appreciate the beauty of this region: the mountains, lakes, valleys, and beaches … we love it all! To keep fit and active, you will often find me hiking, working out, or practicing at the shooting range. Michelle and I enjoy finding good foods and new eateries as well. We both serve in the children’s ministry at church and very much value the relationships we have built within that community. w

Tar Heel For Life

I am a lifelong North Carolinian. Having been raised in the mountains near Hendersonville, I have also lived in Wilmington, Chapel Hill, Emerald Isle, and now Huntersville. I completed my undergraduate degree in biology and achieved my dental degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I was the president of my graduating class.

On Moves That Matter

Moving to Huntersville in 1998 to start my solo practice was the culmination of four years of Navy service at Camp LeJeune and five years as a partner in Greenville. My wife Susanne and I established the practice, and she still serves as the office manager. I have now been practicing for the last ten years with Dr. Julianne Colvin as my business partner.

The Music Man

I have always been interested in the sciences and my connection to the arts was strengthened by my love of music and participation in high school and college bands. Being able to combine art and science is the essence of dentistry while serving others in the process. Listening to and playing music is so cathartic and relaxing for me. I was fortunate to learn a musical instrument when I was a boy which has a number of benefits—including my profound appreciation for those who make music their career … it takes a lot of hard work and dedication!

Giving Back

In addition to my professional affiliation with several national dental organizations, a big source of pride for me is serving as a volunteer dentist for several clinics including the NC Missions of Mercy, Donated Dental Services, and Team Smile throughout North Carolina to reach folks in need of dental care. We help those without insurance and those who may be unable to pay for their own treatment. It’s an absolute honor to do the kind of work that helps so many people across the state.

Brent DR. CRAWFORD

All In The Family

The person/dentist/father I am today is all because of the incredible women in my life and their respective influences on me. The challenge and benefit of working with over 60 women in 34 years of dental practice has been both humbling and inspirational. Having just celebrated Mother’s Day, I’d like to credit my mom and my wife Susanne as great examples of how women have strengthened and shaped my life. I am very proud of my daughters Morgan, Rachel, and Erin. They attended Community School of Davidson where Erin is a Junior now. Morgan and Rachel both graduated from the University of Virginia, and all of our girls are excelling and succeeding—as well as being active in public service and giving back to their community. w

THRILL e of e grill!

THIS ONCE SIMPLE BACKYARD picnic activity has evolved into a fullblown hobby for many, requiring a formidable skill set. Grill masters everywhere are creating recipes and techniques that make this a serious craft. From veggies and desserts to full racks of lamb, grilling is a yearround event. Grilling is healthy and delicious. Grilling is science. Grilling is fun! Here are a few tips to try for your next cookout:

HOME 42 JUNE 2023 . lakenormanwoman.com

AS WITH ANY COOKING METHOD, QUALITY INGREDIENTS are paramount—from steaks to seasonings, buy for quality. is is true of your tools as well so be sure to research accessories such as thermometers, utensils, bakeware, etc. and buy the best.

LET YOUR MEAT COME TO ROOM TEMPERATURE before grilling and allow the meat to rest after taking it o the grill for about 5-10 minutes prior to cutting/serving.

YOUR OUTDOOR GRILL CAN BE AN EXTENSION of your indoor kitchen—anything you can bake in an oven (casseroles, pies, brownies, pizza, cake) can be baked on a gas or charcoal grill.

LEARN AND MASTER THE “4 T’S”— Temperature, Timing, Techniques, and Tools.

ALWAYS PREHEAT YOUR GRILL FOR 10-15 MINUTES. Not only will heat loosen any bits of food hanging onto the grate (which you can then easily brush o ), it also helps prevent food from sticking and it is necessary to properly sear certain foods as well.

KEEP THE LID DOWN. It speeds up the cooking time and prevents food from drying out. It also traps the smokiness that develops when fats and juices vaporize in the grill, adding that extra avor you want from grilling.

KEEP IT CLEAN. Buy a good stainless steel grill brush and use it!

OIL THE FOOD, NOT THE GRATE. Oil will not only prevent food from sticking to the grill but it adds avor and moisture too. A nice brush of olive oil on your meats and vegetables will do the trick. w

To lift your space from average to something more sophisticated, you will need a piece that will impress … perhaps a bar or a large, sleek desk. With consignment, you can shop upscale options without breaking the bank.

6 essentials

MAN CAVE FOR A SOPHISTICATED

SHOPPING CONSIGNMENT FURNITURE

can mean finding a unique, high-end item with a price tag that is a fraction of the retail price. And if you are designing a man cave, there are lots of options— from luxurious leathers and soft velvets to clean, contemporary lines or Englishinspired details, there will no doubt be something to suit your needs.

Courtney Weaver is a marketing specialist at Consign on a Dime (19207 W. Catawba Ave.) and Showplace 28 (20924 Torrence Chapel Rd.) in Cornelius. You can reach her and the entire team at www.consignonadime.com.

If you are just starting to plan your man cave, no matter the theme, here are some basics to consider for a more upscale/ sophisticated space:

A CULTURED LIBRARY

Maybe your idea of a man cave is a room with bookcases holding a collection of all your favorite books. We suggest and o er unique storage options for your prized periodicals and treasured titles.

THE RIGHT SOFA

A sofa is one of the pieces in a man cave where you don’t want to compromise. While shopping for the perfect one, think about comfort, size, and a material that sets the mood. Consignment allows you to choose from highend brands in a variety of styles and price points. Whether consigned or new, the right sofa will anchor the space and give you the perfect spot to relax.

MASCULINE MATERIALS

A man cave should embrace masculine materials and deep undertones. Rich leathers, wood, and natural stone are the ideal materials to use within the space. Dark tones of grays, blues, and army greens will marry well with the materials and ramp up the sophistication. Accessories and case goods are a great way to achieve the man-cave vibe.

A TROPHY PIECE

A show-stopping, eye-catching trophy piece could be what sets your man cave apart from others. A great piece of art, an oversized sailboat replica, or a desk made like an airplane wing are just a few of the unique pieces we have had in our shops.

a brea OF FRESH AIR

BAD BREATH CAN AFFECT US ALL but if you smoke, drink coffee, take certain medications/supplements, or eat exotic foods, your breath can suffer. Good oral hygiene practices are essential to maintaining oral health, and this is crucial as well when it comes to your breath. Here are some friendly reminders on keeping your mouth healthy and breath fresh:

BRUSHING YOUR TEETH

Brush your teeth at least twice each day. Use a toothbrush with a soft-bristled head. This will help prevent any damage to your enamel while brushing and will reduce the risk of gum recession. Use the appropriate techniques for brushing your teeth. If you are not sure, ask your dentist to demonstrate at your next visit.

BRUSHING YOUR TONGUE

Bacteria on the tongue can break down proteins and produce sulfur compounds that are responsible for bad breath. The bacteria can also irritate the gums and cause inflammation. It is important to thoroughly clean the tongue by brushing it daily with an oral cleaner. If the smell is caused by an underlying condition such as diabetes, be sure and check with your doctor and/or dentist.

FLOSSING

Did you know that you should be flossing after every meal?

It’s easy to forget about this step but it is crucial for good oral health. Food can easily get stuck between your teeth, which can lead to cavities and irritation of the gum.

CLEANING DENTURES AND DENTAL APPLIANCES

While dentures are not natural teeth, it is essential to clean them properly to avoid bad breath and other tooth decay problems. Patients should brush their dentures after every meal to remove food and plaque, which is a leading cause of tooth decay. If your dentures have metal clasps, be sure to soak them in denture cleanser or water before brushing.

AVOIDING DRY MOUTH

Many things can cause your mouth to feel dry including medications, certain medical conditions, and breathing through the mouth. A lack of saliva can be a problem because saliva washes away food particles and bacteria. When food particles are left behind, they can rot, creating unpleasant odors. Additionally, a lack of saliva can leave your breath feeling stale. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to stay hydrated and prevent dry mouth. Drink plenty of water throughout the day; stay hydrated to help replenish your fluids; and chewing sugar-free gum can help stimulate the production of saliva. You may also want to talk to your doctor about alternative medications if you are taking one that causes dry mouth. w

FAT VISCERAL let’s chat

THE SILENT MONSTER

Belly fat keeps you fat! This fat acts like a tumor. It’s active and all it wants to do is get fatter and fatter. The hormones it secretes cause hunger and cravings. If you only lose a portion of it, it will grow back!

Carrying excess belly fat can negatively impact your cholesterol and blood pressure. In addition, visceral fat releases cytokines that increase inflammation directly linked to weight gain and other diseases like type 2 diabetes, cancer, and more.

Cortisol is a particularly harmful stress hormone. Prolonged exposure to cortisol can undermine weight loss and increase visceral fat.

Increased Interleukin 6 levels (secreted by visceral fat) into the portal vein directly correlates with elevated concentrations of an inflammatory substance called C-reactive protein (CRP). High CRP levels are related to inflammation. Chronic inflammation is associated with insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and atherosclerosis, among other negative health conditions.

Inflammation is stimulated when oxygen struggles to reach your cells; this happens to the fat cells when they are enlarged. When you put on weight, this causes your fat cells to become bigger, and as those cells transition from lean cells to the obese stages, there is less room for oxygen. When you lose weight, you don’t lose fat cells, but you shrink them, leaving more room for oxygen, therefore reducing inflammation.

This type of fat is more common in men. It is belly fat found deep inside your stomach, under your abdominal muscles and around your vital organs, constricting blood flow. It is metabolically active and secretes toxic, inflammatory hormones. Visceral fat is dangerous and is linked to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, stroke, high cholesterol, and certain cancers. It even causes low testosterone and low sex drive!

PHD Weight Loss Founder, Dr. Ashley Lucas, holds a Ph.D. in sports nutrition and chronic disease and is also a Registered Dietitian (RD). Dr. Lucas is a nationally renowned speaker, columnist, and leading expert in the eld of weight management and behavior change.

HOW TO BANISH VISCERAL FAT

LACK OF ENERGY? FREQUENT CRAVINGS? A STUBBORN SCALE?

YOUR BELLY FAT IS TO BLAME

Drop the belly fat and gain control. Support your muscles, eat adequate protein (aim for 0.8g per pound of ideal body weight), and lift heavy things!

Create a healthy metabolic shift. Stick to a meal plan designed specifically for you and your health goals - avoiding severe caloric restriction, shots, drops, and injectables.

Sleep more, stress less. Poor sleep and stress can sabotage your health and fitness goals. Get a quality night’s rest and use meditation or yoga to calm your mind. Remember, it’s not just about your health; it’s about your happiness too. Choose a healthy lifestyle, not just a diet or quick fix.

Change your mind, change your life. Repattern and refocus your brain on how you respond to sabotaging thoughts, other people, and your own inner voice. You can change in an instant, for the rest of your life. Simply because you want to. w

MIND body spirit

By mixing the ingredients of attitude and action, we can change the flavor of our own lives. Learn to nurture your body and soul to lead a more balanced life.

Breathe In, Breathe Out, MOVE ON

STRESS IS INCREASINGLY COMMON FOR many men; therefore, it is essential to nd ways to manage it e ectively. Stressful situations can often trigger a “ ght or ight” response which is the body’s way of protecting us in times of danger. It is a natural response that was e ective for us for centuries to protect us from real, everyday, dangers. Watch out for saber-toothed tigers! Run!

Today, such predators no longer exist but unfortunately the threat has been replaced by everyday situations, making our bodies swim with the unfriendly cortisone hormone.

So how do we manage this? First, we must identify what triggers us to feel stressed; it will be di erent for everyone. Sources can include work, social life, relationships, family, addiction, and loss. Once you gure out the cause, you can work on addressing it.

With acceptance always being the rst part of the journey, here are some helpful techniques to reduce stress levels:

Take care of yourself.

As men, we often want to care for our family, but we are no good to others if we don’t look after ourselves. Studies show that engaging in activities or social events that bring happiness will decrease stress levels.

When things get tough - breathe!

Inhale deeply through the nose, hold your breath for five seconds, then exhale slowly through your mouth. This will send a message to your brain to calm down.

Exercise more. Now, this produces the hormones we like—endorphins! Feeling good is a natural consequence of getting moving. Whatever you enjoy, do it. Hit the gym. Go for a bike ride. Lace up those sneakers and go for a run. Get moving and feel the stress (and hopefully body fat) strip away.

Be present by practicing mindfulness. Meditation puts you in the here and now. Focusing your attention on the present moment and observing your thoughts and feelings without judgment reduces stress and promotes relaxation. After all, most worries and anxieties come from what has (past) and what might (future) come to pass. Focus on the present.

Don’t be such a dude!

It’s okay to talk about your feelings with others. Spend time with friends and family to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness. It’s also essential to cultivate a strong support network of people who can offer encouragement and help when needed. So don’t keep it in; let it out! w

Find the method that works for you; we are all unique, so there isn’t a one-sizefits-all solution. If you find that your stress is overwhelming or interfering with your daily life, seek professional help from a therapist or a good life coach.
