What is a Lung Screening LDCT?

Lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer deaths in the United States. But, as with most cancers, if caught early, lung cancer may be successfully treated.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends annual screening with Low-Dose Computed Tomography (LDCT) for patients at a high risk for lung cancer.

A LDCT is a simple test that uses sophisticated X-ray equipment and up to 90 percent less ionizing radiation than a conventional CT scan to identify lung cancer and nodules that would be invisible on regular chest X-rays—and long before they cause symptoms.

Why would my physician recommend a Lung Screening LDCT?

If you are at a high risk of lung cancer, whether you are a current or former smoker, have had significant exposure to second-hand smoke or have been exposed to other lung damaging occupational hazards, your physician may recommend a Lung Screening LDCT.

Some insurance companies now cover Lung Cancer Screening for individuals that meet specific criteria.

What should I expect during a Lung Screening LDCT?

If this is your first CT, you may not be sure what to expect. Not to worry, we are here to guide you every step of the way. This test is relatively quick and painless. During a Lung Screening LDCT, you will lie on the padded scanner table. You will be asked to hold your arms above your head and hold your breath as the table moves through the CT scanner, capturing images. You may hear a humming sound from inside the machine. The Technologist will be in the adjacent room operating the scanner, but will be able to hear and communicate with you throughout the exam. No IV contrast is needed and the entire test takes just a few minutes.
