ClimateCast Live: Digital Field Experiences with UF/IFAS Extension

Caroline Nickerson, a Ph.D. candidate advised by Dr. Jamie Loizzo, worked with UF/IFAS Extension agents to develop ClimateCast LIVE.

Caroline’s program consisted of five digital field experiences (DFEs) — online, livestreamed programs — that were conducted and assessed in partnership with UF/IFAS Extension to educate adults in Florida about climate change subject matter knowledge and calls to action, including participating in a citizen science project called ISeeChange.

Each program consisted of a mix of background information, live demos, and time for Q&A. All across Florida are welcome to watch the recordings and can learn from the programs, but the programs themselves will include examples from the featured county.

Recordings are archived on this Streaming Science webpage (below), and will appear as part of the ClimateSmart Floridians course and elsewhere.

There were programs featuring Brevard County, Escambia County, Sarasota County, Miami-Dade County, and Monroe County.

Caroline is researching the impacts of this digital field experience as part of her dissertation along with her advisor Dr. Jamie Loizzo. (IRB202300537). Participants who watched the live event or the recordings can participate in follow-up surveys and interviews related to the impact of the program on their environmental attitudes and learning experiences.

The ClimateCast LIVE Press Release

Photos to accompany the press release

Photo One: This is what the City of Cape Canaveral’s Veterans Memorial Park “Smart” Rain Garden will look like! This rain garden will be featured in the Brevard County program. It’s right by City Hall. The rain garden – also known as a bioswale – will be able to hold more stormwater runoff and have better nutrient treatment capabilities due to its enlarged size and diversification of Florida-native and Florida-friendly plants throughout, than what the current dry retention pond can do. If you’re interested in updates or volunteer opportunities associated with this project, please fill out this form. Photo credit: City of Cape Canaveral
