Public Health Emergency extended

Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra renewed the public health emergency (PHE) for COVID-19, effective July 20, 2021. The renewed PHE will end 90 days after its effective date on Monday, Oct. 18, 2021, unless it is further extended. The extension will continue all telehealth waivers and other related flexibilities.

Pediatric COVID-19 infections rising; vaccine authorization is coming

CDC committee to discuss third dose of COVID-19 vaccine

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will discuss giving a third dose of approved two-dose COVID-19 vaccines to immunocompromised people. The committee will meet later this week. After meeting with Pfizer representatives, the U.S. Health and Human Services Department said a booster shot is not needed for the general population of vaccinated Americans at this time.

Young adults less likely to want vaccines

A study from the University of California San Francisco shows about 25% of 18-to-24-year-olds probably or definitely won’t get the COVID-19 vaccine. While less likely to die of COVID-19 infection, this age group represents more than one-fifth of all COVID-19 cases to date.

Health care groups want employment contingent on COVID-19 vaccination

A coalition of health care organizations wants COVID-19 vaccines mandated for those who work in medical facilities. The coalition includes the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, the Infectious Diseases Society of America and five other medical groups. Thinking of mandating the vaccine for your staff? Read a recent College Practice Excellence column on this topic.
