The Year In Review
In 2021, discussion around the role of technology in agriculture hit the mainstream, as the world looked for solutions to some of its most vexing problems like climate change and water security. The United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26), thrust the agritech industry into the limelight, highlighting its importance to the world.
It was pleasing to see technology play such a key role in the Australian Government’s Long Term Emissions Reduction plan as it identified that investment in technology will be a key way forward towards net zero.
There was considerable investment in federal initiatives with a Digital Economy by 2030 strategy statement that aimed to ensure businesses, governments and the workforce keep pace with changes in technology because 'the digital frontier will define Australia’s future prosperity.' It was quickly followed by the Agriculture 2030 focus areas.
We take this opportunity to ask the government to proactively engage with the agritech industry when designing and executing programs intended to create a Digital Economy by 2030, which informed the Ag2030 focus areas, together with other initiatives intended to address innovation and adoption of technology in agriculture and the supply chain, connectivity, water management and climate/sustainability. A cross-portfolio approach is essential and the co-design of initiatives is required in some areas. The agritech companies are already doing the onboarding and adoption of agritech across the country - they are experts in the area and necessary partners for success.
State by State we are seeing those governments develop insightful strategic plans for the development of the agritech industry and adoption and digital agriculture. Yet a national strategy with a clear focus on building a vibrant agritech industry within the complex and broad ecosystem where it must operate - is essential if Australia is to ensure it has the technology capability and adoption to reach its climate/ sustainability goals and production targets in agriculture - and take its rightful place as a world leading developer and exporter of Agritech.
We look forward to working with all stakeholders and the ecosystem in 2022. There are so many opportunities to harness. Thank you to all members, supporters, corporates and stakeholders for your generous support and time in 2021.
