What is a Vein Specialist?

This is a question that we frequently have to answer – because it’s a relatively new concept. 50+ years ago, the treatment of vein disease was performed by general surgeons. However, within the last 50 years, there has been an increase in specialists from other disciplines that have entered the field.

All vein specialists are doctors who have graduated from medical school and then completed residency and fellowship training. They have hands-on experience with the evaluation and treatment of varicose veins, spider veins, leg swelling, and venous ulcers.

While most physicians typically learn how to spot the serious signs of venous disease, a vein specialist is a physician that can perform the types of procedures needed for effective treatment. Their goal is to help patients plagued with venous disease regain mobility and quality of life.

A general practitioner or family doctor would typically treat vein-related issues that can be properly dealt with via medication, recommending increased physical activity, or compression garments. They would then refer you to a vein specialist when your issue cannot be treated in any of those ways. A vein specialist can treat vein-related issues using minimally invasive outpatient procedures including laser technology, radiofrequency technology, or a type of adhesive to close the vein.

At your first visit, a vein specialist will ask you some questions about your vein health. Complete our complimentary 3 minute vein screening here.
