Wander out yonder

The Lou Morrison Kimberley Service Learning Tour is always a sought after ticket for students and staff, with tour groups returning filled with wonder, stories and enthusiasm. This year’s group of 28 Year 9, 10 and 11 students and accompanying staff kept the tradition alive, engaging with Aboriginal culture, the natural environment and serving others, and again coming home with life-changing experiences under their belt.

Staff and students recently shared some of the highlights below:

After touching down in Broome, the group spent 11 days exploring WA’s Kimberley region with Kimberly Safari Tours. They were fortunate enough to visit the Indigenous community of Lombadina on Cape Leveque where they sent time picking up rubbish along the backdrop of beautiful, private beaches as part of the Service Learning aspect of the tour. The students were then taken on a guided tour around the Lombadina community from one of the Elders, learning about culture and history.

A highlight of the trip was visiting the Mowanjum Aboriginal Art & Culture Centre where the students were the first group to visit the newly-opened museum and practiced painting with ocre rocks. This provided valuable insights into local culture and Australian history.

The group visited the Cygnet Pearl Farm where they were to be greeted by Duncraig Alumni, Shae Keep (Class of 2016) who gave a tour and information about the Pearling industry.

They then travelled inland to visit areas including Fitzroy Crossing, Halls Creek and Wolfe Creek Crater, the site of the world’s second biggest meteor strike.

In the final days, the group took on some of the physical challenges the area has to offer including walking Emma Gorge, visiting Zebedee Springs and canoeing on Lake Argyle before flying home from Kununurra.
