Austin Strategic Mobility Plan celebrates two years of progress

WATCH: learn about the plan’s key strategies to reach "50/50" mode share by 2039.
Last week, the City of Austin celebrated two years since City Council unanimously adopted the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan, or ASMP. The policy document guides Austin's transportation planning and implementation over the next 20 years in a coordinated approach among City departments and regional partners.

Chief among ASMP's goals is to enable Austinites to shift how they commute. By 2039, the City hopes about half of Austinites will get to work without driving alone in a car. The ASMP lays out strategies to allow more people to safely and efficiently commute by transit, foot, bike, scooter, carpool or any other mode that replaces driving a car alone.

At last week's City Council Mobility Committee meeting, staff debuted the first ASMP Progress Report, which includes an interactive dashboard detailing the implementation status of each of the ASMP's 279 action items.

Safe Routes Education Team Trains 700+ Students in New Virtual Lessons

Rosie teaching bike safety lessons on Zoom.
Our partners in the Austin Public Works Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Education Team are always ready to go the extra mile to keep Austin students safe. Throughout the pandemic, SRTS Education has developed a suite of roughly 50 virtual tools to share with Austin PE teachers, students, and their families. And starting this spring, the team conducted school-based safety lessons over Zoom, reaching a total of 721 students through virtual events at Langford, Graham, and Andrews Elementary Schools.

The SRTS Education Team’s Zoom trainings include animated PowerPoint lessons for third to fifth grade students and kindergarten through second grade students. The lessons promoted ways to stay safe while walking and biking, ways to stay active, and more. Students participated in the training either from the school gym or virtually, and each student was able to ask the SRTS Education Team questions in real time.

Each year, the SRTS Education Team trains over 47,000 students from nearly 100 elementary schools on walking and biking safely. SRTS Education is currently planning Zoom trainings for additional schools. Learn more about Safe Routes to School here, and check out the SRTS Education webpage here for downloadable safety lesson plans and tools for teachers and families.

City of Austin chooses partner for Bloomberg Asphalt Art grant

The City of Austin, after accepting and reviewing proposals from local nonprofits, has selected Creative Action and E4 Youth as community partners for the Bloomberg Asphalt Art Initiative. This initiative is designed to fund visual art interventions on roadways (intersections and crosswalks), pedestrian spaces (plazas and sidewalks), and vertical infrastructure (utility boxes, traffic barriers and underpasses) in U.S. cities with the goal of:
  • Improving street and pedestrian safety,
  • Revitalizing and activating underutilized public space, and
  • Promoting collaboration and civic engagement in local communities.
Through the grant, Creative Action plans to install a series of public art installations that will increase safety on the corridor and amplify the history and culture of the historically Black and Latinx East Austin area. If awarded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, the project will benefit community members living in the area by preserving the area’s history and supporting economic development. E4 Youth plans to deploy an interactive and digital element to the installations that connects the general public with important stories from the area. The final proposal from the City and Creative Action is due to Bloomberg by April 30, 2021.
