THERE have been unconfirmed reports pointing at chemical poisoning as the cause of multiple deaths at the Enyobeni Tavern.
News24 recently reported that carbon monoxide poisoning caused the deaths of 21 teenagers at the East London tavern.
“Police crime scene experts found a petrol generator inside the venue where hundreds of young revellers partied from Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday morning,” News24 reported.
Portable generator gasses contain carbon monoxide, which is a poisonous, odourless, colourless gas.
If a person is exposed to it for a long period, it can reportedly increase the risk of heart disease. It is also a possible cause of lung cancer.
Never use a portable generator inside your home, garage, or closed-off area.
The deadly levels of carbon monoxide can quickly build up in these areas and can remain for hours, even after the generator has been shut off.
According to Gotpower.com, because it is impossible to see, taste, or smell the toxic gases, carbon dioxide can kill you before you are aware it is in your environment.
The effects of CO exposure can vary greatly from person to person depending on age, overall health, and the concentration and length of exposure.
What makes this gas so dangerous is that when you breathe it in, it replaces the oxygen in your blood. Without oxygen, the cells throughout the body die, and organs stop working.
If you breathe too much of it, it becomes deadly within minutes.
